Wing Morphometry Helps Diagnose Cryptic Species and Resurrect Mindarus pinicolus (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

چکیده
Wing venation, two-dimensional and with easily recognized reference points at vein junctions, presents an opportunity for the development of automated insect identiÞcation. Using a suite of continuous characters, I investigated the use of wing morphometry for computerized insect identiÞcation of cryptic species of the aphid genusMindarus. A priori groups were determined using cytochrome oxidase 1 DNA barcodes. Discriminant function analysis of 24 wing measurements consistently grouped individuals of unknown taxonomic afÞnity with the correct a priori groups. The results suggest that diagnostic signal is present in wing morphometry, but the signal is considerably strongerwith the addition ofmorphometry fromother aphid appendages, namely, 10 leg and antennal segments.Almost allMindaruscollected ineasternNorthAmericahavebeendeterminedas thebalsam twig aphid,Mindarus abietinus Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae), but molecular diagnostics reveals that thePalearctic species is notpresent in theWesternHemisphere.SchizoneurapinicolaThomashasbeen considered a North American synonym ofM. abietinus. Morphometric discriminant function analysis suggests that theAbies-feeding eastern North American population isM. pinicolus. The species is here reinstated with a new combination and redescribed.

The mitogenome of Mindarus keteleerifoliae Zhang (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a 15,199 bp circular molecule. The gene order and orientation of M. keteleerifoliae is similarly arranged to that of the ancestral insect of other aphid mitogenomes, and, a tRNA isomerism event maybe identified in the mitogenome of M. keteleerifoliae. The tRNA-Trp gene is coded in the J-strand and the same sequence in th...
متن کاملCryptic diversity of the subfamily Calaphidinae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) revealed by comprehensive DNA barcoding
Aphids are a species rich group comprising many important pests. However, species identification can be very difficult for aphids due to their morphological ambiguity. DNA barcoding has been widely adopted for rapid and reliable species identification as well as cryptic species detection. In this study, we investigated cryptic diversity in the subfamily Calaphidinae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) based...
متن کاملNew Records of Aphid Fauna in Turkey
Three aphid species were identified as new records for Turkey aphid fauna from Bartin province. These species are Ceruraphis viburnicola (Gillette) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Dysaphis apiifolia (Theobald) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Macrosiphum mordvilkoi Miyazaki (Hemiptera: Aphididae). These records increase the recorded aphid-fauna of Turkey to 433 species.

Aphid species within the genus Tuberculatus Mordvilko (Hemiptera: Aphididae) exhibit a variety of interactions with ants, ranging from close associations to non-attendance. A previous study indicated that despite wing possession, ant-attended Tuberculatus species exhibited low dispersal rates compared with non-attended species. This study examined if presence or absence of mutualistic interacti...
متن کاملIdentification of the Alarm Pheromone of Cowpea Aphid, and Comparison With Two Other Aphididae Species
In response to a predator attack, many Aphidinae species release an alarm pheromone, which induces dispersal behavior in other individuals within the colony. The major component of this pheromone is the sesquiterpene (E)-β-farnesene (Eβf), but variations occur between aphid species. In the present work, we collected, identified, and quantified the alarm pheromone of Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemip...
